NanoSIMS imaging reveals elemental and isotopic composition of atmospheric aerosols

NanoSIMS - Source Tracking of Aerosols

Aerosol elemental and isotopic compositions are revealed by imaging with a NanoSIMS.

The NanoSIMS is Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer enabling quantitative imaging as well as :
  • measuring light element and metal distribution, from H to U, with a 50nm spatial resolution and a ppm sensitivity.
  • tracking up to 7 different element simultaneously by multiplexed imaging and elemental/isotopic labelling
  • detecting large variations of elements concentration inside a single images thanks to its 6 order of magnitudes dynamic range
By allowing measuring the elemental and isotopic composition of aerosol, the NanoSIMS opens new avenues in deciphering the source of aerosols and the cycle of element in atmosphere !
