In the brain, communication between neurons is allowed by neurotransmitters which are stored in vesicles. The vesicular storage of dopamine was studied by NanoSIMS 50L imaging in the neuronal cell model PC12. These images show the 3D mapping of vesicular 13C labeled dopamine in a freezedried PC12 cell (a) and across a single vesicle (b). 3D reconstruction was performed with the Image J plugins OpenMIMS and Volume Viewer. This work illustrates that the NanoSIMS 50L is a powerful tool to investigate the chemical composition of cellular nanostructures.
The measurements were performed on the NanoSIMS 50L of the Gothenburg Imaging Mass Spectrometry (Go:IMS) platform at Chalmers and Gothenburg University.
