City University of Hong Kong orders CAMECA LEAP 5000R
CityU of HongKongCity University of Hong Kong, ranked among the world's top 200, will be the first academic institution in Asia to equip itself with CAMECA's new generation atom probe.

The LEAP 5000R will be used to study the nanostructural features in advanced structural and functional materials. Main applications will include:
  • three-dimensional quantitative characterization of nanoparticles in advanced high strength steels;
  • nanoscale heterogeneity and nano-crystallization in bulk metallic glasses;
  • defects, grain boundaries, domains and nano-twinning mechanisms in metals and alloys;
  • nanoscale interaction of nanoparticles with irradiation-induced defects in nuclear materials;
  • atomic decomposition and segregation in high-entropy alloys;
  • composition and morphology characterization of functional nanomaterials and bio-materials

The instrument will be installed at College of Science and Engineering under the leadership of Prof. C. T. Liu from CityU and other professors from the City University of Hong Kong, and in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  The new atom probe facility is financed jointly by the Collaborative Research Fund, the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, and internal funds from City University of Hong Kong.
